In this emotionally charged film, based on the serialized novel by Stephen King, Academy Award winner Tom Hanks brings the character of Paul Edgecomb, a 1930's prison guard to life. Edgecomb is in charge of life, and death, on "the Green Mile," the block of cells where condemned prisoners await the electric chair. When John Coffey, a seven-foot tall black man convicted of the gruesome murder of two little sisters arrives on the mile, the guards expect trouble but instead discover a gentle giant afraid of the dark and capable of healing miracles. Coffey soon affects the lives of everyone around him from the upstart guard, Percy, to a trained mouse, to the prison warden and his dying wife, with miraculous consequences. Edgecomb, and eventually the others, begin to doubt Coffey's guilt and question his impending execution.
